Purpose of the job: To provide safe, high-quality education and care for early years children. To fulfil legal and statutory requirements. To support the manger in the day to running of the pre-school. To contribute to early years policies. To act as manager in the manager’s absence. Have your own key children.

Safeguarding requirement: Ranikhet Rainbows Pre-School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is a requirement of all staff that they share this commitment and follow the prescribed policy and procedures to continuously promote a culture of safeguarding across the whole organisation.

 Main duties:


  1. To take responsibility for drawing up long-term, medium-term, and sessional curriculum plans which take into account the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and to monitor the effectiveness of the setting’s curriculum; this may include working with external
  1. To take responsibility for maintaining healthy and safety for the setting including making risk assessments for in and outside the pre-school. This does not include the Forest School.
  1. To be responsible for providing a high quality of education and learning, ensuring that staff are properly deployed, and to offer appropriate stimulation and support to the children attending the setting.
  1. To provide child led opportunities to the children in the setting to enable them to obtain a high-quality education.
  1. To have an appropriate action plan in place which enables the setting to achieve and maintain a minimum good Ofsted rating at the next inspection.
  1. To actively participate at team meeting, supervision meetings and appraisal meetings.
  1. To attend training courses as required and to take responsibility for personal development.
  1. To ensure that staff are appropriately supported to carry out their role effectively, including the Early Years SENCO and Inclusion Leader.
  1. To be responsible for implementing systems of observation and record keeping so that children’s progress and achievements are effectively and regularly assessed; to help monitor the effectiveness of assessment
  2. To ensure that the welfare and safety of children is promoted within the setting and that any child protection concerns are always acted upon appropriately and
  1. To ensure records are properly maintained and updated, e.g., the daily attendance register, accident, and incident
  1. To liaise closely with parents/carers, informing them about the setting and its curriculum, exchanging information about children’s progress and encouraging parents’
  1. To ensure that Ranikhet Rainbows Pre-School is a safe environment for children, staff, and others, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are implemented at all times and fire drills are regularly practiced, which are carried out by Ranikhet Academy.
  1. To ensure that risk assessments are undertaken and completed in and out of the setting (Ranikhet Rainbows). This shall not apply to the Forest School.
  1. To implement any recommendations made following regulatory
  1. To update to and to implement all early years policies and procedures, e.g., register and signing out procedures, child protection, health and safety, confidentiality, food safety, setting
  1. To ensure that children attending the setting receive a balanced and healthy
  1. To attend any conferences, training events or meetings, as identified by the owners and to keep up to date with current good practice.
  1. To ensure that accurate and up-to-date record keeping systems are in place e.g., children’s records of progress and any behavioral and development reports, any safeguarding issues, health and safety issues, notes taken at staff supervision meetings, details of targets set and of any performance concerns
  1. To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the owners in accordance with the setting’s business plan/objectives.
  1. To help set up the room for the daily programme and to help tidy away at the end of the session.
  1. Ensuring that all toys and equipment are always clean and safe at all times.
  1. To assist the manager in the induction of new staff and to mentor volunteers and staff.
  1. To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families, or other staff, which is acquired as part of the job.
  1. To ensure that adequate records are kept and updated regularly.
  1. To promote the setting to current parents and potential customers.
  1. To be aware of and adhere to all the setting’s policies and procedures, for example: safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and diversity, health and safety, fire precautions, whistleblowing.
  1. The deputy is expected to take holidays outside of the term time. If circumstances render this impossible, leave must be requested in writing to the Directors.

This job description is not an exhaustive list of duties, and the post holder will be required to undertake any other reasonable duties discussed and directed by the line manager. The post holder is also expected to be flexible and adaptable in their approach to fulfilling their duties.

Essential criteria:


  1. At least two years’ proven experience of working in an early years care and education setting or at least two years’ other suitable
  1. Level 3 early years education and childcare qualification or
  1. Sound understanding of child development, child led communication and activities in order to meet the children’s
  1. Ability to plan and implement a pre-school curriculum, taking into account the SEN Code of Practice, child protection procedures and equal opportunities
  1. Demonstrable and detailed knowledge of current legislation relevant to the early
  1. Understanding of the Prevent Duty in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, as it relates to early years
  2. Ability to comply with the requirements placed on the setting by the
  1. Ability to work with parents and families to encourage their
  1. Demonstrate a commitment to continuously promoting a culture of
  1. Commitment to equal opportunities and an understanding of equality and diversity issues.
  1. Ability to write clear
  1. Ability to lead and manage a team of adults to deliver high standards and results.
  1. Ability to manage self and work calmly under pressure.
  1. Physically fit. Able to carry children, move equipment round and walk for the Forest School Site in Lousehill Copse.
